SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. – For a town frequently split in acrimonious debate over questions of racial justice and law enforcement, an online hearing last week on proposed changes in town policing produced some rare agreement.
Most of the more than two dozen speakers generally applauded the Lewisboro Police Department’s efforts toward equity and a number of them agreed that Lewisboro’s police officers should not be subjected to anonymous, third-party sniping about their conduct.
To be sure, however, differences continue to exist. For many, the draft recommendations of Lewisboro’s Police Committee on Reform and Reinvention were solutions in search of a nonexistent problem.
