Heartbreak tonight on long island. A family and a community remembering a young mother killed this morning by an out of control driver. It happened moments after she had dropped her son off at his school bus. Good evening at 11 00. Im Shirleen Allicot in for sade baderinwa. And im bill ritter. The young mom just 25 years old, killed along with her dog as a car jumped the curb. Her young son was also at tonights vigil. Eyewitness News Reporter jim horrific story. Barbara caton lost control of her vehicle at the most unimageable place on union boulevard. She struck and killed a 25yearold mother who had had just dropped her son off at the school bus. Reporter Skye Brunettis son helped people write notes to his mom and left them at a makeshift memorial that grows where she died, a wrenching moment in a day of unending grief. She was a saint. She really was. If anybody knows her, shes a saint. Reporter friends lit candles tonight and held each other. They cried with one another after a day
And good soul. Wonderful mother. Did everything for her son. She was always there for her son. She stayed home. She did what she had to do as a parent. It was great. Reporter it was skye brunettis morning routine to take the family dog, walk her son to the bus stop, then return home. But this morning she didnt make it home. Police say 50yearold Barbara Caton of east islip driving this White Chrysler jumped the curb and killed brunetti and her dog. Police arent releasing details on what caused her to veer off union boulevard. The car struck the 25yearold right in front of her home. Caton was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Many of brunettis friends and family members came to the scene in disbelief. She was an amazing person. More than anything. Brunettis brother told me the car was speeding before it hit her. This is what you hear. He is facing 26 sex crimes in suffolk. On his website, mcclain says he s a pastor, who held Church Services out of his suffolk home. And at that same house according to the paperwork he sexually abused a minor for several months last year. Mcclain admitted to the abuse according to a transcript detailing his conversation with a detective. During the interview the pastor admitted that temptation got the best of him. Most of the rest of the interview is too graphic to share on tv but at one point mcclain says the sexual relationship was consensual. And mcclain said the victim initiated the sexual relationship. Before his arrest police say mcclain moved to North Carolina closing his church. Now all you find at his home, is a for sale sign. Mcclain is being held in jail. The four robberies all happened on wednesday police say they know who one of the suspects is but is still working to find out who is responsible for the others and if they are all connected. Clerks at the 7 eleven say tell us that the rash of robberies are concerning and makes them worry about their lives. Customers outside the stores say they can relate to the situation the clerks were put in during the robberies and can imagine how they felt afterwards.
