Officials of Chattogram Customs House seized a container of cigarettes worth Tk 19 crore which was imported under false declaration last night.
The container was imported with the declaration that it container clothing accessories for garments industry with a bond facility. The tax rate of the declared goods is 0 percent, which can go as high as 120 percent to 600 percent in case of cigarette, customs officials said, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent. Savar based trader- Versatile Attire Limited declared the import as garments raw materials which arrived at the Chattogram port at the end of May. State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mohammad Mahbub Ali on Wednesday urged the officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines to work sincerely for increasing the revenue of state run airlines.
He made the urge while inspecting Biman Poultry Complex at Ganak Bari in Savar.
He visited various branches of Biman Poultry Complex and gave necessary directions to the concerned officials for increasing the production of Poultry Complex and marketing development of the products.
Earlier in the morning, the state minister also inspected the renovation work of ‘Hotel Obokash’ and National Hotel and Tourism Training Institute of Bangladesh Tourism Corporation at Mohakhali in the city.
Customs seize Tk 11cr worth of illegally imported cigarettes

Chattogram Custom House yesterday seized a container of cigarettes worth Tk 11 crore, which was imported under false declaration.
The container was brought with the declaration of having A4 size papers for a Chattogram-based trading company, Karim Trading, said Rezaul Karim, assistant commissioner of customs.
Legal action will be taken after an investigation, he said.
The tax rate hovers around 53 per cent for A4 size papers, which can go up to 600 per cent in case of cigarettes, customs officials said.
In this consignment, the importer has been trying to dodge Tk 11 crore import tax, they said.
