Back here in our area two deaths in icy ponds, one year apart. Family and friends of 13yearold Austin Pendergrass gathered at the shore of a south reno pond and released balloons at the exact moment he was pulled year ago. Ventured out on the ice through and was underwater for a half hour. He was pronounced dead hours later at a local hospital. Just hours before todays memorial . A 19 year old man drowned at Paradise Park after falling through the ice. Pendergrass it broke my heart because its still happening. I dont understand why its not stopped. The name of the 19 year old who died this morning at Paradise Park isnt yet released. He was with family members who were putting themselves at risk when rescuers arrived. It hit me at registration day, school r rgistration day and then just spiraled down. But today as she relived her own loss she learned a 19 year old man had drowned hours earlier at paradise pond. He reportedly walked out on the ice toward an area stirred by a pump where the ice was weak and had fallen through. When rescuers arrived they found family members on the ice trying to get to him. Pine middle school is facing some Serious Problems after a pipe burst about two weeks ago. Chris weve had to go in and replace all the tile floor, all the carpet in all the classrooms. 95 percent of the first floor is damaged. That includes the band room. And a few lockers. Personal items had to be removed and bagged to clean up the asbestos. Chris we take them off site, we put them in a climatized area, apply heat to them, make sure theyre useful. While crews remove the Hazardous Material and dry everything up. Class will have to start on the 25th. Two weeks later than scheduled. To make up for some of that lost time.
