Balboa Park has many honors to its credit, including ranking high on popularity lists as one of the best parks in the nation and the world. This week, it added another accolade.
On Monday, the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership announced that the park has become the first cultural district and historic landmark in the U.S. to be awarded LEED for Cities and Communities certification. An acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED recognizes green building practices that are sustainable, cost efficient and energy saving. The park joins 115 other LEED-certified cities and communities worldwide.
Over the past decade, San Diego officials have worked with Balboa Park’s nonprofit tenants and partners, including San Diego Gas & Electric, to make improvements in energy use, water conservation and waste diversion, in part to meet the city’s climate action goals.
