Biden administration approves major disaster declaration, wildfire aid for Washington

Biden administration approves major disaster declaration, wildfire aid for Washington February 5, 2021 at 8:36 am A service station that was destroyed by a wildfire is shown Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, in Malden, Wash. High winds kicked up wildfires across the Pacific Northwest, burning hundreds of thousands of acres and mostly destroying the small town of Malden in eastern Washington state. (AP Photo/Jed Conklin) Five months after a wildfire destroyed the towns of Malden and Pine City, President Joe Biden approved federal aid for the those communities and other areas of Eastern Washington that were burned by fires last year. More than 85% of the buildings in Malden and Pine City, both in Whitman County, burned to the ground in the Babb Road Fire in September 2020. The Department of Natural Resources also donated a surplus fire engine to Malden in December after the town’s fire station and its own fire engine was destroyed in the fire.

Malden, Pine City still asking for federal aid after devastating fires

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers wrote a letter to recently-inaugurated President Joe Biden asking him to approve a major disaster declaration, which would provide relief for towns in Whitman County that experienced three major fires beginning Sept. 7.  The three fires Babb Road Fire, Manning Fire and the Colfax fire destroyed over 80 percent of Malden and over 50 percent of buildings in Pine City, according to an Evergreen article.  “My team and I have sought relief for these communities, but individuals, families and businesses are still waiting,” McMorris Rodgers wrote in the Jan. 22 letter.  On Sept. 16, Gov. Jay Inslee asked then-President Donald Trump to declare the Babb Road Fire a major disaster, which would allow cities to access millions in aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to The Spokesman Review.

Malden still awaits federal aid, four months after fire

As President Joe Biden begins his first few days in office, one city in Washington eagerly awaits the financial assistance that has been sitting on former President Donald Trump’s desk since September.  During Labor Day weekend, the Babb Road Fire destroyed more than 80 percent of the city of Malden. Over 100 homes were destroyed, said Malden Mayor Dan Harwood. About 24 homes survived the fire, and most of the community buildings were burnt, including the fire station.  Since then, the town has remained strong and hopeful that the Federal Emergency Management Agency grant they were approved for would be signed by Trump, said Malden councilmember Scott Hokonson.
