By-election boost for Enfield Tories dents Labour majority

By Simon Allin @SimonAllin3 Local Democracy Reporter, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Andrew Thorp won Chase ward for the Tories A by-election win for the Conservatives has boosted their standing on Enfield Council and put a further dent in Labour’s majority. The Tories took a seat in Chase ward from Labour following a campaign that focused on protecting Whitewebbs Golf Course, which the council wants to lease out to a commercial partner. Conservative candidate Andrew Thorp was elected with a 7.5 per cent majority and vowed to “work hard to save Whitewebbs”. Labour held Southbury and Jubilee, where they won large majorities in 2018, but there were swings towards the Conservatives and other parties in both wards.

Enfield Labour holds Southbury seat with large majority

By Simon Allin @SimonAllin3 Local Democracy Reporter, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Newly elected Southbury councillor Ayten Guzel A newly elected councillor has pledged to work hard to continue the legacy of her predecessor who passed away last year. Cllr Ayten Guzel won a seat in Southbury ward with a 13.8 per cent majority for Labour in a by-election held on Thursday. The poll took place following the death of long-serving Labour councillor Chris Bond in July. After being elected, Cllr Guzel posted on Twitter: “I am truly honoured to have been elected as the new councillor for Southbury ward. “Thank you to the Labour activists who campaigned and, most importantly, the Southbury residents who voted for me. I will work hard to carry Cllr Chris Bond’s legacy. May you rest in peace Chris.”
