Hyundai reveals redesigned 2022 Kona and Kona electric SUVs
Both updated models of thre groundbreaking compacts will be arriving at dealerships this spring.
Hyundai has provided details for its significantly redesigned 2022 Kona and Kona Electric small crossover SUVs for the U.S. market.
The 2022 Kona includes an all-new sporty N Line trim, and an updated powertrain line-up that provides both sporty and eco-friendly options to suit a wide variety of buyers. Hyundai has also upgraded its connectivity and convenience features to make for an even more satisfying ownership experience. The advanced safety suite has also been improved with new active and passive safety features available.

The new Hyundai Elantra has been named as the 2021 North American Car of the Year. The win secured by the CN7, which made its debut last March, makes it the second time the nameplate has won the North American COTY award, the first being with the fifth-gen in 2012. It is also the automaker’s third COTY title.
The 50-strong jury picked the seventh-gen Elantra ahead of the two other finalists, the Nissan Sentra and Genesis G80. Judging was based on points such as segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for money.
In the US, the Elantra is available in both petrol and hybrid guise. Petrol models are powered by a 2.0L MPI Atkinson Cycle engine with 147 hp at 6,200 rpm and 179 Nm of torque at 4,500 RPM. The mill is paired with the company’s Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), its in-house developed and produced CVT with eight virtual speeds.

The seventh-generation Hyundai Elantra has officially been launched in Malaysia. Just one variant – the 1.6L IVT – will be offered, and the fully imported C-segment sedan is currently priced at
RM158,888.
It’s the second car to be styled based on the automaker’s Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy, after the Sonata. Power comes from a 1.6 litre naturally-aspirated Smartstream G engine, producing 123 PS at 6,300 rpm and 154 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The MPI engine is paired with Hyundai’s own Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) with eight virtual speeds.
All in, the front-wheel drive sedan will do the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 10.4 seconds before topping out at 196 km/h. The in-house claimed combined fuel consumption is 5.6 litres per 100 km, or 17.85 km/l.

The new Elantra follows the Sensuous Sportiness design identity as per the new Sonata, but if the D-segment model is all about curves, the Elantra is full of sharp lines and triangles. Hyundai says that triangular shapes is a “taboo” in car design, and this is a bold attempt that achieves “geometrical beauty”. Definitely a love or hate design, but it’s certainly bold, and no one can accuse Hyundai of playing it safe and boring. The recently-revealed fourth-gen Tucson has the same Parametric Jewel design theme.
