With preliminary data from the 2020 US Census showing a population decline in Illinois, the state will be losing a seat in Congress. Illinois is one of seven states that will have less representation in Washington DC due to declining population numbers.
State Representative Avery Bourne (R-Raymond) says this trend needs to end.

Bourne says the legislature needs to enact business-friendly laws that will keep people here and draw political districts in a fair process. States gaining a seat in congress include Texas, Florida, Colorado, and North Carolina.

It’s not just legislative districts Illinois lawmakers are in the process of redrawing, they’ll also be redrawing Illinois’ congressional districts, and the state is expected to lose a seat. State Representative Avery Bourne (R-Raymond) says an independent group needs to take over the task.
She says the decades old systems are used to protect incumbents and political machines.

Statehouse Democrats questioned whether at this stage a measure creating a commission would be constitutional and said they’re “focused on inclusion, not legally questionable distractions.”
