Youths recognized in YMCA-FCA scholarship program
PRATTVILLE Jenna Stilling was surprised to hear her name called out Monday night as the winner of the Willis Bradford Christian Leadership Award.
The Prattville Christian Academy senior was among six qualifiers from high schools serving Autauga County for the YMCA-Fellowship of Christian Athletes program. Jenna, a self-described introvert, said the presentation by Mike Lamar, a member of the Y s board, could have applied to any of the qualifiers. I read through the social media posts that the YMCA put out about a week ago and I knew that all those statements described every single one of the individuals out here so I really didn t expect it, she said. Being put into all the leadership positions has really challenged me to grow. I remember a quote from Carrie Fisher, she said Stay afraid, but do it anyway. BIRMINGHAM – Autaugaville High School closed out the first boys’ basketball perfect season Friday night with a 38-34 victory over stubborn Belgreen in the Class 1A championship game of the 99th AHSAA State Basketball tournament.
The victory wasn’t decided until junior guard Antonio Hardy sank two free throws with five seconds left to give the Eagles (30-0) a four -point lead. Belgreen (26-3) missed two 3-point goals a few seconds earlier – both good looks by Bulldogs senior guard Scout Bragwell. He nailed a trey at the buzzer ended the half from the top of the key following an inbounds pass that came with just 1.3 seconds left in the second quarter. The bucket sent Belgreen to the locker room at intermission leading 22-18.

BIRMINGHAM – Autaugaville High School will get the chance to cap a perfect season after clinching a berth in the state finals Tuesday. The undefeated Eagles (29-0) downed Decatur Heritage 62-48 in Tuesday’s semifinals of the AHSAA Class 1A Boys’ State Basketball Championships at Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Autaugaville built a double-digit lead in the first quarter, led by as many as 19 points and held off a late Decatur Heritage rally. The victory sends Autaugaville into Friday’s 1A championship game against Belgreen (26-2), which beat Notasulga in today’s other semifinal. Tip-off for Friday’s title game is set for 4:30 p.m., at Bill Harris Arena.
