Austin firefighters rescued a person from a fire in South Austin

Austin firefighters Thursday evening rescued a person from a house fire in South Austin.  The person, who was only identified as an adult, was taken to a hospital, according to Austin fire officials. Officials did not specify the severity of the person s injuries but said they were evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS medics. The person was able to walk and was conscious, according to fire officials.  Austin Fire Department Battalion Chief Calvin Poole said no other people were inside the house, which is located on the 3200 block of China Grove in South Austin. He said most of the fire was contained to the kitchen of the house.

Winter storm in Texas: Hundreds in Austin report broken water pipes, request medical services

Austin and Travis County area first emergency workers say they are being flooded with calls requesting medical services and reporting broken water pipes amid severe winter weather in the region. Captain Darren Noak, a spokesman for Austin-Travis County EMS, said the emergency crews have received more than 1,200 calls for service as of 9:30 p.m. I ve been here 25 years and this is the busiest, Noak said. I ve never seen calls over 1,200. On a busy day with a special event, 500 or 600, maybe. We re keeping busy, that s for sure. While medics continue to respond to medical emergencies, the Austin Fire Department said they were getting an overwhelming number of calls about broken water pipes. 

A pair of 18-wheelers and a third car got in a crash in South Austin

A crash involving three vehicles  two 18-wheeler trucks and a car  on Interstate 35 has led to lane closures near the Slaughter Lane exit, Austin fire officials said Wednesday.  Austin fire officials said they got a call regarding the crash around 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials said one person suffered non-life threatening injuries from the crash. One of the two 18-wheeler trucks caught fire, but the other two vehicles were not damaged by the blaze, officials said.  Officials said the southbound lanes of the highway near the Slaughter Lane exit in South Austin are expected to be reduced down to one lane for the next several hours because of the crash.
