Fire damages Buford Tower on Cesar Chavez Street

Fire damaged the historic Buford Tower in downtown Austin on Thursday evening but is now under control, according to Austin fire officials.  Austin firefighters were trying to put out a fire near the structure earlier in the evening. Around 9:20 p.m. Thursday, Austin fire tweeted that the fire had spread to the tower.  The fire department tweeted shortly before 9:30 p.m. that the fire was under control and added that the damage was mostly limited to the exteriors and the windows of the structure, which is located at the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Colorado streets.  Fire officials said the fire that spread to the tower is believed to have stemmed from a camp near the structure that is occupied by people who are experiencing homelessness.

Firefighters tackle blaze at former Long Estate mansion in Central Austin

A fire that broke out early Friday at the former Long Estate, a nearly 12,000-square-foot mansion in Central Austin that was owned by philanthropists Joe and Teresa Long, took hours to knock down and the extent of the damage it wrought is still unknown, the Austin Fire Department said. The home, which was put up for auction by the Longs in July 2020, according to Austin Culture Map, was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported. A driver reported at 3:17 a.m. that smoke was coming out of the mansion at 2308 Woodlawn Blvd., just east of MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) near Windsor Road.

Austin Fire Department battle fire at East Austin Tyndall condominiums

Austin firefighters on Friday battled a fast-moving grass fire outside modern East Austin condominiums just off Interstate 35. The blaze broke out just before 2 p.m. in the 800 block of Embassy Drive at the Tyndall at Robertson Hill, the Austin Fire Department reported. The fire, which authorities said was caused by a worker using a weed eater, scorched grass along a hill outside the condos and destroyed some landscaping including several trees. It burned right up to the building, but didn t set it on fire, AFD Division Chief Thayer Smith said. No injuries were reported, Smith said, and the fire was under control about 10 minutes after crews responded to the fire.
