It seemed like a great idea at the time. It was the late 1980s, and Newport was hosting the St. Patrick’s Day parade, as it had every year since 1957. One of the sponsors brought along a half-dozen miniature Clydesdale horses. Prancing proudly in the middle of the parade, the diminutive equines did indeed charm the spectators if not the marchers who followed. “The people who came after had to tiptoe the rest of the route,” says James Mahoney, Grand Marshal of the 2008 parade. Lesson learned. “After that year, all equestrian mounts were placed at the end,” he says with a chuckle.
William Walsh Corcoran, “Bill” to his friends and “Pop” to his family, (91) died after a suffering a heart attack on Tuesday morning January 19, 2021.
Born on October 16, 1929, Bill was a life-long resident of Newport and a graduate of Rogers High (1947), the Portsmouth Priory (1948), Brown University (1951), and Boston College Law School (1958). He served as a deep sea diver in the US Navy, specializing in submarine rescue, before embarking in a long career as an attorney and senior counsel to Corcoran, Peckham, Hayes, Leys & Olaynack, P.C.
William served as a member of the Newport City Council from 1967-1971, and he was a member of the Redevelopment Agency of Newport, which was responsible for the transition of Goat Island from a derelict torpedo plant to a hotel, marina, and public space, the development of Brick Market Place, the renovation of Bannister’s and Bowen’s Wharves, and the upgrading of Newport’s sewage system, ending of the practice of dumping sewage
The Alzheimer’s Association, Rhode Island Chapter is pleased to announce and welcome David R. Carlin lll as the association’s new Director of Public Policy and Communications. Carlin will serve as the principal staff for grassroots advocacy efforts, government affairs and communications efforts in Rhode Island. Reporting directly to the executive director, he will promote the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association in Rhode Island by building and mobilizing grassroots advocacy, interacting with policy makers and coalitions, building media relations, and communicating the Association’s issues and priorities as a public speaker and resident expert to the media.
Mr. Carlin comes to the association with more than 22 years of experience in business, government affairs, public relations, communications and financial services. Most recently, he worked with the Northern Rhode Island Wholesalers and Service Store Association and was employed prior to that by the Northern Rhode Is
