It happened a couple years ago or so, as far as Darren Berry recalls. The sound of gunfire cracked from a city park, piercing the calm of an evening.
“We don’t get those calls,” he said. “That’s the first one I remember.”
Berry has been with the city of Vandalia for 15 years in various positions, currently as city administrator. Such outbreaks are rare in the community.
And he’s not the only one to notice.
Recently the home security company Safewise listed Vandalia as the second safest city in Missouri.

In a Facebook post, the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office reports a deputy was on patrol in Vandalia just before 4 a.m. Friday when he spotted a vehicle driven by Willy Sitton, who has active warrants for his arrest in Pike County along with parole violation warrants from the Missouri Department of Corrections.
Sitton spotted the deputy and fled into Pike County, abandoning his car and continuing on foot into a field near Curryville.
Pike County Sheriff’s deputies who were more familiar with the area were called in on the search, and Sitton was taken into custody.
Mexico officers arrest man after Monday shooting

Authorities arrested a man Friday in connection with a shooting earlier in the week.
On Monday, the Mexico Public Safety Department responded to the 1000 block of W Breckenridge in reference to a disturbance involving a gun.
Authorities said Trayvon D. Walls, 30, was at the home and then later crashed his car on N. Missouri Street. Officials said they later found out Walls had been shot one time during the initial incident.
The Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney s Office issued an arrest warrant for Walls for unlawful use of weapon, unlawful possession of weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.
