Two years in, Sony wants to bring 360 Reality Audio to the masses

January 14th, 2021 At CES 2019, Sony had a glass room in its massive trade show booth. In the middle of the space was a small table with a single speaker resting on top. At first glance, I could tell the device had multiple drivers, as three were clearly visible from the top. What came next was my first demonstration of Sony’s 360 Reality Audio immersive, room-filling sound from a single speaker. Two years later, the company introduced that unit as the SRS-RA5000: one of two Sony connected speakers that will support the immersive 360 Reality Audio platform it has been preaching since that CES.

Sony will debut its own 360 Reality Audio speakers this spring

January 8th, 2021 A prototype 360 Reality Audio speaker at CES 2020 Billy Steele/Engadget Sony has been preaching the gospel of 360 Reality Audio for two years now. At CES 2019, the company first showed off the immersive audio platform that was designed to make it sound like you were inside the music. More specifically, artists and producers could position instruments and vocals around a sphere in Sony’s software, positioning them around the listener virtually to create the immersive effect. Thus far though, the company hasn’t remedied two key issues. First, Sony hasn’t shipped any speakers of its own that are specifically designed for 360 Reality Audio. And secondly, the library of content remains quite small. With an announcement today ahead of CES 2021, Sony is looking to remedy both.
