Canterbury Magicians grab lead in Hallyburton Johnstone Shield

Kate Ebrahim has continued her excellent form for the Canterbury Magicians. The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield has a new frontrunner after the Canterbury Magicians won the first of two top-of-the-table clashes in Rangiora on Saturday. Fresh off winning the Super Smash Twenty20 title last weekend, the Magicians big 78-run win over the Central Hinds broke the deadlock at the top of the table as they also grabbed a bonus point, with Kate Ebrahim carrying her bat through the hosts innings with an unbeaten 102 off 150 balls. Just a week after her recall to the White Ferns T20 side, it was the veteran Ebrahim s fifth Domestic List A century and third for the Magicians (with her first two tons having been for opponents the Hinds) in a winning start for new Canterbury captain Gabby Sullivan.

Green makes most of international opportunity

A phone call from White Ferns coach Bob Carter last week confirmed Green’s ascent to the international ranks. Green wasn’t required to bat in the 20-run loss on Sunday – a 50-over affair where 14-strong squads were selected – but made a useful contribution with the ball, taking 2-31 off six overs in England’s innings of 299/9. Two days later, the return was even better – 5-56 off 10 overs as the NZ XI won by 30 runs. Green said she had found the step up to international-level cricket easy to slot into with a number of familiar teammates in the New Zealand squad.

David Williams reports Erin Bermingham reckons it’s a stitch-up. The former White Fern will captain the first police women’s cricket team in Christchurch this week against the first New Zealand under-19 women’s side. Both sides are hankering to play. The police’s inter-services tournament – against the army and air force – was cancelled, while the ICC under-19 World Cup, meant to be played in Bangladesh last month, was postponed until later this year.

Wellington Blaze chasing Twenty20 Super Smash four-peat after finding redemption

Andrew Cornaga/Photosport All-rounder Amelia Kerr played a key role for the Wellington Blaze in their elimination final win over the Auckland Hearts. Kerr made an unbeaten 54 off 44 balls and Devine made 33 off 29, while captain Green made 32 off 29 and said afterwards that redemption was “very sweet”. “Obviously the Hearts played really well last weekend, but the really pleasing thing is I think we learned a lot as a group, especially around our batting and putting together partnerships, particularly at the top of the order. “I thought Amelia Kerr paced her innings perfectly well and the way that Thamsyn Newton came in at the end and played a little cameo and ran really well too., that was great.
