VK Saraswat bats for independent ministry for pharmaceuticals

“There is a need for creating an independent ministry for pharmaceuticals. Time has come to expand and consolidate efforts in the pharma sector,” Saraswat said on Monday.
Saraswat was speaking at the Global Bio-India 2021 event, jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises and Invest India.
NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat has called for creating an independent ministry for pharmaceuticals as India gears up to lead the world in pharmaceuticals while suggesting a need for more viral institutes in the country, simplification of regulatory system and upskilling India’s existing workforce to make a readily available talent pool for the sector.

New Delhi: The Biotechnology sector has emerged as an integral part of the Indian economy over the past few decades, and the Government of India is playing a transformative and catalytic role in building a USD 150 billion bio-economy by 2025. The sector is recognized as one of the key drivers for India to achieve its USD 5 trillion target.
