in monterey park, a suburb just east of los angeles. let s get right to cnn national correspondent camila bernal on the scene this morning. it s very early in the investigation, but what do we know right now? reporter: yeah, amara, boris, information is very limited, but as you mentioned we just got confirmation from the l.a. county sheriff s department that nine people have been killed. we know this shooting happened around 10:22 last night. there are homicide detectives on the scene already. and we also know from the sheriff s department that the suspect is a man. we do not know whether or not that suspect is in custody or they re still looking for that person because, again, information has been extremely limited from authorities. we have been waiting for a couple of hours now to get that information. and there is someone here from the sheriff s department that is expected to talk to the media fairly soon. so we are waiting for that information. the streets in this area
officials will give us an update on any new developments. meantime, i want to bring in our correspondent, who is there, and bring you up to speed on what we know thus far. at least ten people are dead, another ten hospitalized after the shooting saturday night in monterey park. the los angeles county sheriff s department says the male suspect in the attack fled the scene and remains at large. california governor gavin newsom sharing his condolences in a tweet that says, in part, monterey park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the lunar new year. instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence. the deadly shooting happened inside a dance studio seen here, shortly after 10:00 p.m. local time during a lunar new year holiday celebration. the city of monterey park is about seven miles outside of los angeles. and is a predominantly asian community. the mayor of los angeles, karen bass, saying the news is absolutely devastating, adding f

southwest florida woke up to today, you ve seen houses shredded, others carried away by brutal storm surge including cars ending up in bays in some circumstances. steve harrigan by the grace of god rode out of this storm close to the impact his own as anyone else and tonight we find him right across a causeway connecting the barrier islands. you have seen some horrific destruction, what can you tell us about how the search and rescue attempts are unfolding in the dark? they are going on, they have carried out more than 700 rescues and they got started just after 1:00 in the morning. as soon as the wind died down more than 40 miles per hour they were out there risking their lives to try to save people who were trapped, some of those people on rooftops, both by helicopter and on land. talk about destruction, it is remarkable in the daylight hours to go around and see the level of destruction. i m standing in front of a destroyed house in a destroyed neighborhood. it s a sad s
