Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday introduced The Assam Repealing Bill, 2020, to abolish all state-run madrassas and convert those into general schools with effect from April 1, 2021. Notably, the three-day Winter Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly commenced today.
The bill proposes to abolish two existing acts The Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation) Act, 1995 and The Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation of Services of Employees and Re-Organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act, 2018. We have introduced a Bill whereby all madrassas will be converted into institutes of general education and the state government will not establish any madrassa in the future. Guwahati, Dec 28 (IANS): The Assam government introduced a Bill in the Assembly on Monday to shut over 600 madrasas run by it, which was strongly opposed by the opposition Congress and AIUDF.
Assam Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced the Assam Madrassas Education (Provincialisation) Act of 1995 on the opening day of the three-day Winter Session. Once the Bill is passed (by the House), the practice of running madrasas by the government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by the Muslim League government in pre-Independence Assam, Sarma said in a tweet.

GUWAHATI: BJP-led Assam government on the first day of winter session of the state legislative assembly on Monday introduced a repeal bill that proposes to convert all government-funded and private madrassas, which came into being since pre-Independence period, in the state into general schools of learning.
The Assam Repealing Bill, 2020 was introduced by education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma which proposes to make redundant the Assam Madrassas Education (Provincialisation) Act of 1955 and the Assam Madarassa Education (Provincialisation of Services of Employees and Re-Organization of Madrassa Education Institutions) Act of 2018.

GUWAHATI: The state government will bring a bill to repeal the Assam Madrassas Education (provincialization) Act of 1995 in the winter session of the assembly in the last week of December, which will pave the way for it to close down all government-run madrassas and Arabic colleges in the state.
The state cabinet on Sunday cleared the decks for dissolving the State Madrassa Board from the next academic session and all their academic and administrative authority will be transferred to the Directorate of Secondary Education. Teachers, who are teaching theological courses in the madrassas, will be trained to teach general subjects in the schools.
