GUWAHATI: Assam Health Minister said on Thursday that the COVID situation in Assam should recede post-May 15.
The minister further said that if a status quo is maintained as far as the COVID cases in the state are concerned, then there should be no need for the government to announce a lockdown. When do you need a lockdown? When a state runs out of hospital beds and is unable to handle the situation. If we continue to report around the same number of cases or maybe a little more or less, I do not think we will have to announce a lockdown. Even Prime Minister Modiji has said that lockdown should be the last option. We should do everything to avoid a lockdown, the Health Minister told reporters after he stepped out of a temple in Biswanath. Sarma offered prayers at the temple just 3 days ahead of the result day.

GUWAHATI: Assam will double the number of session sites for Covid-19 vaccination, as the state faces a huge challenge to vaccinate about 1.6 crore people between 18 and 45 years after their online registration. This comes as the caseload in the state continued to surge, with 1,844 more testing positive on Sunday, while the daily positivity rate surged to 5.48%. Altogether, 800-1,300 session sites are being operated daily across the state. But the state immunization spokesperson, Munindra Nath Ngatey, told TOI on Sunday that the health department has estimated at least 3,000 session sites to vaccinate as many young people as possible. Considering the increasing trend in positive cases, some health experts have predicted that the highest new Covid-19 cases may be recorded in the northeast in May-June, after which the positivity rate is likely to start declining.
