The government spent Tk 246,583 crore in July-January of 2023-24 out of the total budget of Tk 761,785 crore for the entire fiscal year, figures from the finance ministry showed. The outlay under interest payments and subsidies was Tk 88,226 crore, which was 36 percent of the allocation.
Eminent economist Prof Rehman Sobhan has said people don't believe that key institutions like the Bangladesh Bank, the National Board of Revenue and the Anti-Corruption Commission are run in line with rules and regulations. "It needs to analyse the institutions that do not operate according to the law. Even, many do not believe that there are any rules in Bangladesh.
The latest figures from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) reveal, Bangladesh's economic growth has slowed to a mere 3.78% in the second quarter of FY24, the slowest pace in the last three quarters. This slowdown is largely driven by the negative growth of the manufacturing sector, the backbone of the Bangladesh economy, which contributed the most to its GDP.
