Three farmers were killed by lightning in Shariatpur and Madaripur districts today. In Shariatpur, two farmers Tazul Islam (62), hailing from Joyshagor village of Jajira upazila, and Malek Peda (42), hailing from Rarikandi village were struck by lightning while they were working at a paddy field at 2:00pm today, reports our correspondent quoting Ashrafuzzaman Bhuiyan,
He said all water traffic was suspended due to Cyclone Yaas. But a trawler with 16 people on board started for Padma from Jajira s Palerchar to around 4:00pm to catch fish. The trawler sank in the middle of the Padma river due to strong currents, he said.
Local boats rescued 11 people alive. Among the 11, six were admitted to Jajira upazila health complex.
River police recovered a dead body after a rescue operation while four others remain missing till filing of this report.
SI Mridul said they conducted a rescue operation till 8:00pm last night and will resume in the morning today.

Md Nahid Mia and his wife Surma Akhter live in Dhaka s Lalbagh. They were going to Surma s village home in Barguna s Amtali to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr yesterday.
As long-distance public transport is suspended, they decided to cross the Padma on a trawler and landed on the banks of the river in Jajira, reports a correspondent from Shariatpur.
After walking for five kilometres on the Padma char, Surma who was pregnant started having labour pain. She was taken to a house in Majhikandi village on the char, where she gave birth to a baby girl around 5:00pm yesterday.
