Savannah lands on Daily Mail for St Patrick s Day crowds

Friday was the beginning to the six-day event called Shamrocks and Shenanigans Festival at the Plant Riverside District. In the article, Daily Mail said large crowds were seen swarming the Plant Riverside on Saturday and the mayor was not happy with the event. To advertise this huge festival with the intent of drawing people to a particular space in the middle of a pandemic, when we know social distancing and mask wearing is not going to be enforced, is horrible as far as I m concerned, Johnson said in a quote.  The article shows photos of patrons entering bars, doing pub cycles, police patrolling the downtown area, a man flashing what s under his kilt, and more.

St Patrick s Day in Savannah starts with a bang, but wakes up slow

But around 11 a.m., the historic roads weaving in and around City Market weren’t seeing much more foot traffic than a typical Saturday in the spring. On River Street, a group of green-clad revelers would pass the open doors of bars and restaurants here and there, but it was a far cry from the revelry of years gone by. Even Plant Riverside, the newest fixture on the west end of River Street and the location of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration this year, was relatively quiet Saturday morning. COVID has certainly left its mark on Savannah’s biggest holiday. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade was canceled for the second year in a row, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee didn’t elect a grand marshal for the first time since World War II.
