In the context of the second Covid surge, a group of 116 former civil servants has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the government of not addressing the crucial issues at stake.
What makes this “open letter” significant is that the signatories include former Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar, former foreign secretary and national security adviser Shiv Shankar Menon, former health secretary K. Sujatha Rao, former adviser to the Prime Minister T.K.A. Nair, former chief information commissioner Wajahat Habibullah and former Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung, among others.
NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday announced a year’s extension for Intelligence Bureau director Arvinda Kumar and RAW chief Samant Kumar Goel, making way for continuity at the helm of its intelligence apparatus. The two-year fixed term of both the officers was due to end on June 30, 2021, but now stands extended to June 30, 2022.
In another important move, the government replaced Jammu & Kashmir chief secretary B V R Subrahmanyam with Arun Kumar Mehta, currently finance commissioner in the J&K department of finance. Subrahmanyam, the Chhattisgarh-cadre IAS officer believed to have been handpicked by the prime minister three years ago to head the bureaucracy in J&K, had seen the erstwhile state through crucial phases such as President’s rule, abrogation of Article 370 and its reorganization into Union territory. Tenures of R&AW and IB chiefs extended; CBDT gets three Members The Modi government on Thursday brought in the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, as next the Commerce Secretary, Government of India, upon superannuation of Anup Wadhawan on June 30.
Mr. Subrahmanyam is a 1987 batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, and was sent on deputation to Jammu and Kashmir in June 2018. He served as Chief Secretary when the State was bifurcated into two Union Territories in 2019. He is a widely experienced bureaucrat having worked in Manmohan Singh Prime Minister’s Office as Joint Secretary.
