PHOTO: File Colonel Arthur Martins, Chief of Police of the North Providence Police Department announced Saturday night that at approximately 4:00 PM members of the North Providence Police and Fire Departments were notified of a stabbing that had occurred inside the Cumberland Farms located at 2064 Smith St.  Both the victim and suspect were reported to be males. “While officers and other public safety personnel were being sent to the scene, police dispatchers were made aware that the suspect had fled the store and was being followed by several witnesses.  The witnesses were able to direct responding officers to the location of the suspect,” according to police.

May 1, 2021 7:16 pm NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- A man died after he was stabbed several times at a North providence Cumberland Farms Saturday afternoon. North Providence police said they responded to the Smith Street convenience store for a report of a fight around 4 p.m. The middle-aged victim suffered several stab wounds, according to police. Chief Arthur Martins said the victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he later died. Martins said the suspect was caught outside of the Rhode Island Billiard, Bar and Bistro. This is North Providence’s first homicide of the year. Mayor Charles Lombardi was on scene.

Ruggiero says he s ready to fill NPPD s top role

NORTH PROVIDENCE – As a young man first getting into law enforcement, Alfredo Ruggiero Jr., like many others, dreamed of one day returning to his hometown to lead its police department. Ruggiero, 54 and the town’s deputy chief for the past year, said he was surprised and humbled upon hearing from Mayor Charles Lombardi that the mayor would not be running a search for a new chief and would make Ruggiero the replacement for the retiring Chief Arthur Martins when Martins leaves North Providence in June. That being the case, he said he’s definitely ready to assume the department’s top job.

Chief Martins announces retirement; Ruggiero will succeed him

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Fifteen months after being sworn in as North Providence’s chief of police, Arthur Martins is set to retire, an unexpected circumstance that he says he never envisioned when sworn in last year. Martins, the town’s former deputy chief under David Tikoian, has a long career in law enforcement, including previously serving as a sergeant in Pawtucket, where he served for 28 years, leading successful efforts to improve neighborhoods through quality community policing. He then served as an investigator with the Office of the Attorney General before coming to North Providence in early 2018. Martins and Mayor Charles Lombardi notified command staff of the chief’s departure Monday morning, and Lombardi used the opportunity presented at that meeting to also announce that Deputy Chief Alfredo Ruggiero Jr. will be promoted to chief and that there will be no search conducted for other candidates to replace Martins.
