The move to build up a library of exclusive and highly differentiated content rights, even at significant costs, echoes Netflix s shift in strategy around 2012. It worked out well for Netflix, and looks like it ll work out well for Spotify, too.
Spotify said on Wednesday that it reached an exclusive multiyear licensing deal with popular podcast Armchair Expert, adding to the streaming service s growing repertoire of audio programs. Armchair Expert, launched in 2018, is co-hosted by comedian Dax Shepard and Emmy-nominated producer Monica Padman. The weekly program has interviews with thought leaders, authors, celebrities and artists. It was the most downloaded new podcast on iTunes in 2018 and one of the most popular podcasts on Spotify. Today, Spotify announced that it has signed a deal to make Dax Shepard s Armchair Expert podcast exclusive to their streaming service. All past and future episodes of the show will only be available on Spotify starting on July 1, 2021.

Washington [US], May 13 (ANI): American actor Dax Shepard s popular podcast titled Armchair Expert has inked an exclusive deal, moving to Spotify. It will be available only on the audio platform starting this summer.
As per Variety, under the multiyear exclusive license agreement, all existing and new episodes of the award-winning podcast, co-hosted by Shepard and Emmy-nominated producer Monica Padman, will be available exclusively on Spotify beginning July 1.
Like Spotify s other podcasts, Armchair Expert will be available to listeners for free (with ads). The deal comes after Spotify a year ago inked a similar exclusively for the popular podcast The Joe Rogan Experience , and as the company has been greenlighting a steadily growing slate of original podcasts.

“The Armchair Expert,” the podcast co-hosted by actor Dax Shepard and podcaster Monica Padman, is heading to Spotify in a multiyear exclusive deal, the streaming giant announced on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Spotify said it also includes a first-look deal with Armchair Umbrella Network.
Shepard’s podcast launched in 2018 and quickly became one of the most popular celebrity-hosted shows around, routinely ranking in the top 30 on Apple’s podcast charts. (It’s currently the 16th most popular podcast on Apple.) The show features an eclectic mix of guests, with recent interviewees including Bill Gates, Seth Rogen, Andrew Yang and Amy Poehler. Actress Kristen Bell, Shepard’s wife, is also a frequent guest.
