what is really extraordinary, also, about what rudy giuliani said about this september 1st date is he laid it out plainly, not in that interview but a different one, that they want to be able to say, if mueller doesn t meet the deadline, he s the one who is interfering in the election. not the president of the united states. it is not his problem. they re trying to leave him out there to dry. hang him out to dry, so to speak. it is also setting up a situation where if they don t do the interview with mueller, they can say, we gave you a deadline, options of how we d be willing to do it, and you didn t meet it. too bad, too sad, no interview. keeps us busy. thank you for your insights. stay with me. we ll have much more. drawing a blank. the new questions about diversity at the white house, says one of the president s closest white house advisers struggling to name an african-american staffer in west wing. that s when we come back. this morning. hey dad.

president bring more african-americans, people of color, into his inner circle, particularly in the west wing? when kellyanne conway was asked about this, she pointed to ben carson. he is, of course, a cabinet secretary. the criticism is that there aren t african-american voices very close to the president. i ll tell you though, this president values the input from his cabinet secretaries. he s had more cabinet meetings excuse me than i can recall previous presidents. they re very common. he seeks their guidance and input. you do have secretary canson. you have dr. jerome adams on the health care side. you have the head of medicare and medicaid services with verma. you have people of color who are often in the office. he relies on them so much to provide that guidance. of course, you always want to see the white house staff looking like our country. i don t think we should take it just because they re not in those offices right there, that he is not hearing from them.

of outreach is a staffer named hen henry childs ii. he s had dozens of meetings. he s been in touch with top officials. it is not necessarily working out of the west wing. what do you make of this? is this shining a light on what could be a broader diversity issue for the white house, and how firmly are they pushing back to you? sure, kristen. i mean, the white house staff is not diverse. it is overwhelmingly white. there is not an african-american on the senior staff of the white house. there hasn t been since omarosa left the staff. you could also question, you know, how influential she was when she was there, some of the top decisions that are made every day. past presidencies, including in george w. bush s presidency, there have been african-american figures who have been on the senior staff, who have been counseling the president daily on issues. we don t have that with this administration. marc, final thought on that, would you like to see this
