W-B Twp has an interesting history

Are you familiar with how and when our township was formed? I am taking the opportunity to brief my township readers on some facts on how Wilkes-Barre Twp. got its name and when it was formed. The township was one of the original townships, named in honor of John Wilkes and Isaac Barré, two British Parliament members who supported colonial America and fought for our freedom while they served in the British Parliament. The township was formed in 1774 when it stretched from the Susquehanna River to the Lehigh River and included present day Wilkes-Barre City, Laurel Run Borough, Bear Creek Twp. and Buck Twp. In 1849, Moses Tammany departed from Ireland and upon his arrival in our area, he acquired most of the land that is now Wilkes-Barre Twp. for $12,000. Coal companies purchased many parcels of this land that contained the finest and purest anthracite coal deposits in the world.

Cartwright pushes for reclaiming abandoned mine lands

Cartwright pushes for reclaiming abandoned mine lands Congressman Matt Cartwright is proposing new legislation to help maintain the trust for future projects in Luzerne County. Author: Peggy Lee Updated: 11:16 PM EST March 10, 2021 WILKES-BARRE, Pa. Congressman Matt Cartwright announced that he hopes to keep federal funding for abandoned mines available.  The Abandoned Mine Land Trust Fund was established in 1977, and money from it is responsible for the reclamation of many mine lands right here in our area.  The fund is set to expire in September, but Cartwright is proposing new legislation to help maintain the trust for future projects. Here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, think of the Arena Hub Plaza, the distribution centers in Hazleton, and the site of the new high school in Wilkes-Barre, The Democrat said. These are all former abandoned mine land sites that are now or are soon to be places that will drive growth in economic activity

Republican and Democrat congressmen call for extending mine reclamation program

U.S. Reps. Matt Cartwright and Glenn Thompson, a Republican from Bellefonte, have called for renewal of a program that reclaims mine lands. “We’re on a deadline,” Cartwright, D-8, Moosic, said Wednesday of the Abandoned Mine Land Trust Fund, which expires in September. The trust fund, established in 1977, is financed by a tax on each ton of coal mined. Cartwright said the fund paid to restore thousands of open mine portals, 1,000 miles of dangerous highwalls and restored water polluted by mine drainage. Cartwright said the Arena Hub Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Twp. and distribution centers in Hazleton sit on former mine land.
