bargained for. it left people around the nation s capital without power. collapsed roofs in some places. shut down the nation s largest school system. and brought air traffic to a screeching halt. about 1,500 passengers stranded overnight at philadelphia international airport. hundreds of flights were grounded in the new york area. what do you do? rick leventhal want out to check it out at la guardia. how you doing? reporter: great. we got twice as much snow as predicted. the new york public city schools closed for the ninth time since 1978. the problems extend beyond the roads and railways to the airports. they ve opened all three new york city airports, but that s after they canceled some 1,000 flights. as we walk inside, i want to show you some video from overnight of the snow coming down in sheets, sideways, at la guardia and other area airports. and then this morning, we saw
pretty smoothly there. there is a little bit of fog. not affecting things in laguardia. we saw a bit of a rush early on. that seems to have cleared out. that fog is affecting operations at jfk a little bit. nothing compared to what we saw last week with the blizzard and all of the complications that that caused. that storm shut down all three area airports for about 24 hours. an estimated 9,000 flights were canceled. so we have two things going on right now as a result of that. you have people who were rebooked on flights who are still completing trips they started in 2010. you also have people heading home after the holiday who had planned to travel after the new year and who are heading back. that means the airports are crowded. they are busy. things are running normal. not nearly as crowded and busy as they were when the snow descended on new york city. again, mara, thank you. a stunt actor who fell 30
