renee marsh inside reagan national. renee, how many cancellations, how many delays are you seeing? reporter: if you re traveling, you don t want to hear this number. it s inching towards 3,000 at this hour. but to put this all in perspective on an average day, we see about 200 flight cancellations. so we are well above that. the airports that are really being hit the hardest, we re talking about philadelphia, new york area, where we just saw zain. also the d.c. area airports, they re getting hit as well. i can tell you that there s already some accumulation on the tarmac here at dca. we went down into their operations center a short time ago where they are paying attention to everything. we re talking about the temperature. we re talking about what is the temperature of the ground at this point. they re looking at every single detail, because if they need to, they need to get out there and start treating the runways. take a listen to some of the folks who are working 24/7 in the oper
you how brutal mother nature can be. and this is a labor of love on park avenue, businesses struggling all day long. it s really been quit a mess. store owners shoveling out after being closed most of the day, trying to get back in action for tonight. the roads have been treacherous through the northeast. new york governor andrew cuomo sitting through 2013 major highways overnight and into the morning to keep people safe. they re open now in new york city, where we can give you a beautiful live shot and a look from our roving camera in central park, saw six inches of snow, which kept sanitation workers busy all day long but have now turn into a winter wonderland type scene for sledders and joggers. folks have to bundle up because of the cold. the snow was light and fluffy, piled up quickly at area airports, which led to thousands of cancellations and delays
logan airport, already canceling putting flights down for overnight between 8:30 p.m. and noon tomorrow, no flights in the air from boston logan. we spoke with a spokesman for the d.c. area airports here. here what happens he said how they re ready for the domino effect of air travel. because so much of the traffic goes to places like boston and new york, we do expect some effects as we go into the evening into the cities. it seems like the character of this storm is not so much the amount of snow that s coming in, it s the intensity and the wins that will be associated with that it will make air travel difficult to bostons and new york. here at d.c., they know this storm will wreak a lot of havoc, they have staff on standby, here through the night, waiting for the storm to hit in the area and helping with delays. one thing is for sure, for travel, it is going to be a hard 24 hours for travelers are and
and speaking of commitment, let s go outside to nbc s sarah dallof back here in the big apple. she s at city san station where hundreds of plows and salt spreaders are ready to move. sarah? reporter: well, abby, they re taking a real proactive approach, trying to get ahead of the storm this afternoon. we ve got those salt spreaders already out on the roads. as you can see mind me, we ve got the plows standing by. all in all, about 1,000 plows ready to go. 4,000 workers prepared to go battle this winter storm. they re on 12-hour shifts and committed to making sure people are safe and can get where they need to go. now, right now we ve been given an update, about 10 inches of snow expected in this area. already about 500 canceled flights in area airports. airport authorities say they are prepared to have some of those travelers stranded overnight. mean while, residents in new york have been hurrying to the store all day.
cancellations for today. dallas airport is still operating on a limited schedule with hundreds of passengers stranded as you see in the terminals getting their naps in. oh, boy, cnn s gary mcpike is live for us now at reagan national airport in d.c., so it looks like is it still kind of a groundstop there or are there flights that are taking off? reporter: well, fredericka in the last hour it s gotten a lot worse out here. the temperature has certainly dropped and we have a ton of freezing rain and icicles all over our cameras, but the runway, if you can see out there a little bit are not that bad. there have been snow crews at the d.c. area airports over the last couple of hours taking care of that, however, it s the airlines that have canceled a number of flights in the last two hours. u.s. airwayings hs has cancelle number of flights out of reagan airport.
