UK welcomed as full member of OIV following Brexit 6th January, 2021 by Arabella Mileham Following Brexit, the UK has been welcomed as a full member of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), by the organisation’s director general Pau Roca. In a recorded statement over the New Year, Roca toasted the UK re-joining the organisation with a bottle of English sparkling wine, noting that the UK was one of the largest wine markets in the world and although only a small player in terms of production, it had seen “exponential growth” in recent years, particularly of sparkling wines.

For Brokemper, as for everyone – the year was dominated by Covid-19, but the company went into 2020 in a strong financial position, having had the full financial year of 2018 to integrate the Henkell and Freixenet operations globally and strong 2019. “We had a year to see how strong the cooperation of these totally different companies and brands and different markets was performing and 2019 was very good,” he explains.

Winedelivered aims to be the net-a-porter for wine

16 December 2020 By Arabella Mileham Winedelivered.co.uk – which is the supplier of celebrity wines including Kylie Minogue’s wine range – wants to be the “net-a-porter for wine” as it looks to celebrate turning over £1m in its first year of trading. The website was founded by Madeleine St Clair in January 2020 and currently lists a range of Benchmark Drinks’ wines, and although Benchmark is listed as Wine Delivered Limited’s majority shareholder, with St Clair also owning a 25% stake, the two businesses are run as separate entities.  With a background in luxury good and fashion, St Clair said there was a big opportunity for a curated multi-wine website that not only offered “great service and the best wine”, but also included a lifestyle element that is missing from a lot of wine websites.

ProWein Report: Covid-19 will impact investment in sustainability 16 December 2020 By Arabella Mileham Covid-19 is likely to slow down the wine sector’s ability to adapt to climate change and make improvements in environmental sustainability, according to a large new study by ProWein. ProWein Organic World The ProWein Business Report 2020, which is based on a survey of almost 3,500 experts from 49 countries compiled by Geisenheim University at the end of 2020 looked at the effect on the Covid-19 pandemic across the wine trade, and the implications across the sector. The report found that around 71% of producers and 76% of the trade said that they would reduce spending and cut costs as a result of the pandemic, with around 59% of producers and 48% of the trade saying they would delay investment and innovation.
