Shark headcount down by 85% in Pakistan

Scientists attribute decrease in population primarily to overfishing PHOTO: REUTERS/FILE KARACHI: A decline of more than 85 per cent has been reported in Pakistan s shark resources over the past 50 years, according to an analysis, titled Half a Century of Global Decline in Oceanic Sharks and Rays , published in a scientific journal, Nature. The study concludes that the shark population across the world has reduced by 71 per cent since 1970, with shark and ray populations continuing to undergo a staggering decline globally. Top 20 shark scientists, who contributed to the article, have attributed the decline, primarily, to overfishing. The scientists have extrapolated that of 31 species of sharks and rays examined during the analysis, 21 are currently facing the risk of extinction, as around 100 million sharks are caught each year.

In a hearing on Friday, the court said that owners of the site, where the dam is being constructed, have filed nine petitions against its construction. One of the petitioners, Rab Nawaz, told the court that they were given the rate of the land 10 years ago. In all these years, no work was done for the development of the project.

KARACHI: A rare sighting of about 50 Himalayan ibex, including females with their young ones, was recently recorded near the Passu glacier in Hunza valley, the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) reported on Wednesday. The footage was captured in the Khyber village by Nyal Mueenuddin, a wildlife film-maker associated with WWF-P, and Imtiaz Ahmed, a local photographer, who were filming Passu glacier’s ecology and associated habitat. The team came across ibex tracks down the precipitous mountain ridges. The species can be found at an altitude of about 3,660 to over 5,000 metres and usually comes down to 2,135 metres due to snow and in search of food in the winter season.

A few days back, the SSP Investigations had written a letter to SP Anoush pointing out that she was not taking interest in her official duties. The letter mentioned that she was unaware of developments on key cases and skipped appearance before the court to assist seniors. She was also not available to the public to listen to their grievances, failed to attend district standing board meetings. Chauhdry in a reply to his immediate boss had accused him of misleading the senior police officers and termed his dealing as callous, rude and biased.
