During the worst days of the pandemic, the Walton Arts Center staff learned several lessons that solidified their commitment to bringing a wide variety of arts events to Northwest Arkansas.
Cast aside all preconceptions. Call it color-brave, color-conscious or color-blind casting (the last term now eschewed by theater professionals), seeing Jay Gatsby played by a Black actor alters and enhances our understanding of this classic, and, more importantly, the way we dream our American Dream. This cannot happen, of course, if one is an unthinking purist, like the obnoxious Tom Buchanan in the play.
