Muskegon County girl among first group of female Eagle Scouts

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. â A little more than two years after Boy Scouts of America, now known as Scouts BSA, allowed girls to join, the organization is preparing to celebrate its first group of female Eagle Scouts this weekend.
According to the Michigan Crossroads Council, five of the girls making up the nearly 1,000 person inaugural class are from West Michigan, including Grand Rapids, South Haven, and Greenville.
April Bowlin, who lives in Norton Shores, is also one of them.
âIâm really proud of it,â said Bowlin. âItâs something that not a lot of other people can say for sure.â

MUSKEGON, Mich. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. The coveted achievement must be reached before the age of 18, and usually takes six years for scouts to meet all of the specific requirements.
A female scout from West Michigan wasn t allowed to join the Boy Scouts until 2019, but earned Eagle Scout status in two years flat, allowing her to become one of the rare members of the nation s inaugural class of all female Eagle Scouts, as well as the first female Eagle Scout in Muskegon County.
On Sunday, Feb. 21, Scouts BSM will host a nationwide program honoring the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts. In the group will be a teen from West Michigan who is making history as one of the first females in the nation to become an Eagle Scout.
