Scouting for All: Boy Scouts of America Hosts Women of Character Event at National Jamboree

Sparta Troop 1150 to Hold Eagle Court of Honor for 3 Local Girls

May 7, 2021 at 11:09 PM BYRAM, NEW JERSEY, A little over two years ago, the Boy Scouts of America  (“BSA”) opened up membership in its flagship program, the “Boy Scouts” (11-17 years old) to  young women and rebranded it to “Scouts BSA.” The response has been enormous with troops of  young women forming throughout the United States, and scouts advancing through the ranks. One  such troop, Troop 1150, is chartered to Sparta United Methodist Church and has close to thirty  five Scouts, who are actively engaged in the Scouting program, which includes, inter alia, hiking,  camping, aquatics, leadership and community service.  On Saturday, May 8, 2021, Troop 1150 will host its first Eagle Scout Court of Honor for  three of its seven members of the Inaugural Class of Female Eagle Scouts.

(Katie Cannon) MILLBURN, NJ Five women from Scouts Boy Scouts of America Troop 19 in Millburn earned the rank of Eagle Scout on Feb. 8. The troop, chartered at St. Rose of Lima Church-Short Hills, will award them their medals this May at a Court of Honor ceremony. This was the first year in which young women could attain the rank of Eagle Scout, which had been available only to young men for 111 years. The Troop 19 inaugural class of Eagle Scouts are Katelyn Cannon, Keira Lowden, Riya Tyagi, Bridget Lomax, and Morgan Lomax.

Valerie Johnston knew she wanted to be a Boy Scout since she was 6. That’s when she started attending meetings with her brother. When she turned 8, she got special permission to get an official uniform, and she joined the co-ed group Venturing at 14. But because she wasn’t a boy, she couldn’t earn badges to achieve the highest rank: Eagle Scout. “I always wanted to be able to earn everything that my brother and all his friends were earning,” Johnston told CNN. “I had my own book, and I would check off the requirements and everything, so I would wonder like, ‘Well why can’t I earn these? ”
