(Bloomberg) Apple Inc. began Monday to present its case in the closely watched antitrust trial with Epic Games Inc. a defense that will include testimony from Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook.
Epic already has presented witnesses for two weeks in federal court in Oakland, California. First up on the witness stand for Apple is Phil Schiller, an Apple Fellow who runs the App Store and previously was its senior vice president of worldwide marketing for decades.
Apple Fellow Phil Schiller took the stand for the second day in a row in the
Epic Games v. Apple trial, revealing details ranging from data collection to an influencer program for Apple Arcade.
During his testimony on Tuesday, Schiller was asked by Epic s lawyers about the kind of information that Apple collects from its users, including data for ad personalization, location tracking, and storage time limits for said information.
For example, Schiller shot down accusations that Apple collects data to track its users, claiming that location services is about geographically relevant applications and not tracking where users are. Epic s lawyers pointed out that users can t stop Apple from collecting this information, but can opt out of getting targeted ads. When asked whether Apple collects a lot of information about its users, Schiller said he didn t agree.
Apple Clarifies Why Microsoft s xCloud Game Streaming Service Isn t On iPhone
Recent testimony in the Epic Games vs. Apple lawsuit gives Apple s justification as to why Microsoft s xCloud streaming service isn t available on iPhone.
Apple Fellow and head of the App Store Phil Schiller testified in the ongoing Epic vs. Apple trial on Monday, and he responded to criticism from Microsoft (via CNET) that the App Store s rules are burdensome for consumers. Microsoft s criticisms focused particularly on how those rules interact with streaming services like the company s xCloud.
Schiller, who previously led the company s worldwide marketing for 30 years, said that Apple s approach to the App Store is consistent and thoughtful. The main issue at play here is Apple s requirement that all game streaming services submit its individual apps to the App Store for review. For services like xCloud, that means that Microsoft has to submit listings for hundreds of games.
