union, the united federation of teachers. he s just one of several democrats who are busy on the campaign trail this weekend as they are making their case to voters across the country. garrett tenney is live in washington with who s where and what they re doing. first off, impeaching president trump has been the top of the agenda for the contenders, and they re talking about that again this morning. reporter: yeah, eric, there s a lot of sport among the democratic support among the democratic party base, and it is something the candidates are talking about and being asked about out on the trail. senator kamala harris got one of her biggest applause lines when she was asked about impeaching president trump. you know what i think, julia? what do you think? [laughter] i just think he s a walking indictment in a red tie. [laughter] [cheers and applause] reporter: if the house ultimately decided to vote for an impeachment proceeding, the
i ve heard from being in the hbcu community, they re like i don t know yet. you ve got a lot of greeks, i don t know yet. and those are that s their base. and that s what i just i m just not getting it yet. and i appreciate that. i think that this is where i would i definitely agree with you. i think that there is a clear gap. when you look at that graphic again, if they can pull it back up. with kamala harris cash on hand thank you very much. look at that. ask and you shall be given. when you look at this, though, and you compare kamala harris numbers to her debate performances, there s a bridge that needs to be gapped. but i also think the reality is this can easily be turned around with a different debate team, with a different strategy. the people who talked in the focus group she s using the same. it s gotten applause lines at rallies. it works.
but it does make me wonder if these people see the forest for the trees. you know, they re, like, talking about, i can keep this one, you re going to lose that one, this one is incremental, might be mine is buying, in yours they have to opt in. the other guy, holding an ax, you re a socialist bum, mine will be better. kamala harris, she hadn t brought up donald trump in that respect, up until that point it was as though every democrat on that stage was running against each other an there was no general election on the horizon at all. i think senator harris deserves some credit for being the first one to say hi, remember, donald trump, he exists and he wants to gut all of this. some of the biggest applause lines were when some of the candidates said, look, when we re spending all this time attacking one another, the person who has the most to gain is president donald trump. from the part i saw, tell me if there was something that bested this later in the debate, but when julian ca
welcome back. tonight i m obsessed with something from president trump s speech at the house gop retreat in baltimore last night. it was up against the debate, if you recall. not so much what i heard but actually what i did not hear. there certainly were plenty of applause lines. take a listen. two great supreme court justices. take a look. right to try is something we ve done a great job with. republicans believe our cities should should be sanctuaries for law-abiding americans. you re going to take the majority. we established that he said some things and people will clap. but then there was this line. note how the crowd responded. i wouldn t say the fake news was too happy with the outcome, but that s okay.
and how he has a strategy of divisiveness as far as the washington post. everything we hold dear, trump trumps up divisive wars. you pointed out plastic straws. that doesn t really matter. just straws. but do you think it s a bigger message? you re trying to change everything in our way of life for things that won t necessarily have the impacts that they say. talking about plastic straws are missing the forest through the trees. it s about political correctness, about tone. they re trying to create an us versus them mentality. every successful politician, incumbent politician has done that. president bush did it with terrorism, president obama did it in social issues in 2012. president trump is very successful in 2016. he believes very much the same things as the other candidates. but where he defines himself is on tone. dana: one of the biggest applause lines he got is when he
