RMG units to remain open amid week-long Bangladesh lockdown

06 Pic: Shutterstock Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) factories will be open despite the government s announcement of a week-long countrywide lockdown beginning April 5 for curbing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic s second wave, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). The units will follow all government directives. BGMEA president Rubana Huq said social distancing will be enforced in the factories to prevent workers from being infected. Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of the Exporters Association of Bangladesh (EAB) and former president of the BGMEA, said workers are safer inside the factories than they are outside. “That is why we will keep the factories open as before. However, we will be more careful than we were before about following the hygiene rules,” he added.

France s LVMH to combat deforestation in Amazon

Fibre2Fashion Toggle navigation 03 Pic: LVMH LVMH – a partner of the UNESCO MAB (Man and the Biosphere) programme, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – has launched an initiative to combat deforestation in the Amazon. The initiative, being taken in partnership with the UNESCO MAB programme, is part of the group’s new biodiversity strategy, launched at a forum organised by UNESCO. The strategy is one of the pillars of the new LIFE 360 programme (LVMH Initiatives For the Environment), and aims to have a positive net contribution to biodiversity by limiting the activity’s impact on ecosystems, by helping to rehabilitate 5 million hectares of habitat for flora and fauna by 2030, in particular thanks to regenerative agriculture.

Gap to expand operations in Gallatin

Fibre2Fashion Toggle navigation 01 Pic: Shutterstock Tennessee state governor Bill Lee, department of economic and community development commissioner Bob Rolfe and Gap Inc. officials recently announced that the global clothing and accessories retailer will expand operations at its distribution centre in Gallatin. This expansion will create 600 full-time jobs with an investment of $83 million. Gap’s Gallatin operations currently service retail and online shopping orders. As customer demand for online shopping rises and Gap works to grow its online business to approximately 50 per cent of revenue over the next three years, expanding its omni-fulfillment network will allow the company to deliver a faster, more efficient shopping experience to customers across the country, a press release from the Tennessee state governor’s office said.

UK MPs want garment trade adjudicator to fix labour abuses

Fibre2Fashion Toggle navigation 17 Pic: Shutterstock Some members of the British parliament recently called for a compulsory garment trade adjudicator following the failure of voluntary initiatives to stamp out labour abuses in the UK fashion industry. The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) expressed shock that underpayment of wages and poor conditions appeared to be rife in UK garment factories over the last three years. The committee said voluntary corporate social responsibility initiatives had failed to significantly improve pay and working conditions, and the government should therefore explore the introduction of an adjudicator. “Purchasing a garment with a ‘Made in the UK’ label ought to be a guarantee that the workers who produced it are paid at least the minimum wage, in a workplace which is safe. We found that it is not,” EAC wrote in a letter to business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
