Debating sisters take top awards

A student from Co Meath has been crowned the Best 1st Year Speaker in Ireland, while her sister ranked third. Phoebe Boyle and her sister Kyla are both students in Colaiste na hInse, and this is another great achievement for the school, which consistantly produces brilliant speakers. From 500 speakers and in the strangest of circumstances, this year s event took place 10 months later than anticipated. speech writing and pre-recorded speakers replaced 20-minute preparation and speaking partners, and 80 National Finalists including four Colaiste na hInse. Bettystown Speakers were whittled down to the top eight speakers in Ireland. Representing every corner of the country; Kyla Boyle of Colaiste na hInse Bettystown along with seven other speakers debated quite an appropriate motion:

A Cork secondary school student has won the largest debating competition in Ireland. Henry O’Riordan, a student from Christian Brothers College, Cork emerged victorious over 500 fellow speakers to be crowned the best speaker in Ireland. A mere ten months after it was initially due to take part and with speech writing and pre-recorded speakers replacing 20-minute preparation and speaking partners, 80 national finalists were whittled down to the top eight speakers in Ireland. Secondary school students representing every corner of the country debated the motion, “This House Believes Minister Norma Foley Should Resign”.
