On 27 January, while annual Police Day commemorations took place in Pretoria, National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole’s office issued a statement denying that Sitole had stalled the investigation into Anti-Gang Unit detective Charl Kinnear’s death.
Murder accused in the Charl Kinnear assassination, Zane Kilian, will remain behind bars until 24 May when Western Cape High Court Judge Ashley Binns-Ward will deliver a ruling on whether the former professional rugby player will be allowed out on bail.
Ballistics testing will determine whether a firearm found in the gang-infested Elsies River was used in the assassination of the Anti-Gang Unit’s Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear.
The gun was confiscated on Friday, 12 March, after members of the Hawks and the Anti-Gang Unit swooped on the area. This was after information was received that a suspect, allegedly in possession of a firearm that could have been used in the murder of Kinnear on 18 September 2020, was hidden at a residence in Avonwood, Elsies River.
Initial reports on Sunday 14 March indicated that when members of the multidisciplinary team approached the premises, the suspect fled through a window and threw a firearm on the roof. He was arrested and the firearm confiscated.

She also inquired whether Kinnear’s report might have been the motive for a planned alleged hand-grenade attack on their family home, which was thwarted in November 2019.
Security placed outside the couple and their children’s home in Bishop Lavis had also been suddenly removed in December 2019, a month after the hand-grenade incident.
Visiting the home of the Kinnears after the assassination of the top cop outside their front gate on 18 September, Police Minister Bheki Cele ordered an investigation, especially considering that the detective had implicated fellow SAPS members.
