CROMWELL - The Board of Finance has adopted a $54.3 million proposed budget for the coming fiscal year, a package that will go before voters on May 4.

The Finance Board acted after spending about 45 minutes reviewing the general government (or town) budget, but made no reductions in that $17.9 million part of the proposal.
The board did recently reduce the proposed increase in education spending by $312,000 to $32.7 million.
The Board of Education had submitted a proposal calling for spending $33.1 million, a 3.9 percent increase from its current budget.
In presenting her proposed budget, Superintendent of Schools Enza Macri shad said the $33.1 million budget was what she needed to overcome the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and the disruptions it created for students psychologically and emotionally.

CROMWELL With the new public works/WPCA building now occupied, town officials are going back to see what they can do three older buildings that used to house the two departments.
Town Engineer Jon Harriman has issued a request for proposals for a company to conduct a feasibility/space needs study of the former Water Pollution Control Authority garage, the mechanics garage and the former Public Works garage, located at 20 James Martin Drive.

CROMWELL Day in and day out, he went about his job quietly and consistently.
For nearly six years, Erik Rodriguez has been a part-time member of the Town Hall building maintenance team, doing “any number of different things, filling in some gaps” according to Director of Public Works Louis J. Spina.
Last week, Rodriguez closed out his career with the town, moving on a new full-time job in Middletown.
“Erik took a lot of pride in what he does,” Spina said. “He was very conscientious about his work.”

CROMWELL - The Board of Finance trimmed the Board of Education’s proposed budget increase by some $300,000 despite warnings from the superintendent of schools that the decision could lead to layoffs and reductions in school sports.
The Finance Board acted after about 45 minutes of discussion and debate over the school board’s proposed $33.1 million budget.
That proposal would have added $1.256 million to the current school budget, an increase of 3.95 percent.
However, as the clock neared 11:15 p.m., the Finance Board voted 3-2 to reduce the proposal by $312,000 to $32.8 million, an increase of 2.97 percent.
