COLUMBIA BASIN – With the Mat Classic just about a month away, Basin squads continue to battle down the stretch of the 2023-24 wrestling season. Read along to see how local teams fared at last weekend’s tournaments across the Pacific Northwest.
COLUMBIA BASIN It was a busy Saturday on wrestling mats across the Columbia Basin, with the Othello boys, Warden girls and Royal girls all hosting wrestling tournaments this past weekend.
Saturday’s tournament was the first year that the Knights have hosted a girls wrestling tournament, Head Coach Jesus Carlos Villa said.
“It was nice, just an idea that we threw out there,” he said. “We’ve had our boy’s Christmas tournament for several years, and we know that it gets tough for family and friends to support their kids, so what better opportunity than to host a tournament? Have people come out to see what the girls have been doing.”
OTHELLO – After back-to-back seasons placing third in the 2A Boys Mat Classic, the Othello Huskies bring in a team of 75 wrestlers into the 2023-24 season, aiming for yet another high finish at the state tournament.
OTHELLO – After Grandview tied the game with a goal in the final minutes of the second half, the Othello Huskies answered in penalties to defeat the Greyhounds 3-2 and advance to next week’s Central Washington Athletic Conference championship game.
“It feels good knowing that we beat Grandview,” Othello junior Anthony Abundiz said. “They were the team that we had to beat, and we beat them.” .
OTHELLO The Huskies’ 5-1 win over Selah on Saturday marked the team’s seventh win in their previous eight outings, priming them for a run at the No. 2 seed in the Central Washington Athletic Conference tournament in May.
Othello, now 9-4-1 on the year, controls its own destiny, earning a bye and hosting a district playoff game.
