antarctica: Antarctica s ice shelves reduced by over 40 per cent in volume over 25 years: Study

A study published in the journal Science Advances reveals that 71 out of 162 ice shelves surrounding Antarctica have decreased in volume from 1997 to 2021, resulting in the release of 7.5 trillion metric tonnes of meltwater into the oceans. The research shows that the ice shelves on the western side of Antarctica experienced ice loss, while those on the eastern side remained stable or gained volume. The study suggests that warm water and ocean currents are contributing factors to the deterioration of the ice shelves.
