Coronavirus outbreak: Far from home, Indians worry and pray for loved ones

First, there was the scramble to find her father a bed in intensive care. Then came the price gouging for an all-but-impossible-to-find therapeutic injection. And, through it all, countless hours on the phone with doctors, family and friends dealing with logistical problems. From nearly 5,000 miles and five time zones away, Anuja Vakil, 40, has been struggling for the last 12 days to help manage care for her father, Jatin Bhagat, who lies critically ill in an Ahmedabad hospital. She knows he has been lucky to get care at all. “When I pray to God now, it is for my dad,” Vakil said. “He has to come back.”

Covid: Student tells of heartbreaking calls to family in India

Ansh Sachdeva said nine relatives in Delhi had caught the virus and his grandfather had died. The 23-year-old said: Every time I call, someone we know has died of it. Bolton University student Mr Sachdeva said his other grandfather remains ill with Long Covid and has been left feeling so helpless . He returned to Delhi in November to support his family, but was too late to see his grandfather or attend the funeral.

Bolton organisations concerns over young people s mental health

A GROUP of organisations came together with a Bolton MP last week to voice their concerns over the effect the coronavirus pandemic has had on young people’s mental health. Yasmin Qureshi, MP for Bolton South East, hosted a virtual roundtable discussion with a number of groups last Tuesday to listen to concerns they have regarding the mental health of young people in the borough. All in attendance emphasised that children and young people’s mental health has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns. Gill Smallwood, chief executive officer at Fortalice, Daniel Proffitt, CEO at Zac’s Youth Bar based in Farnworth, Ansh Sachdeva, presidents of Bolton University Student Union, and Simon Booth, first team captain and youth coach at Farnworth Cricket Club all shared their experiences dealing with young people during the pandemic and the effects it has had on youths mental health.
