City council should have chosen the next in line

Article content Belleville City council met on Monday afternoon to decide how to proceed with filling the vacant council seat due to the tragic death of councillor Pat Culhane. Councillor Chris Malette enquired about possibly running an electronic by-election. City clerk Matt McDonald wasn’t enamoured with the idea highlighting many issues, especially during a pandemic. Thus, council quickly decided for the option of appointing a person to the vacant post. The motion specifically mentioned Tyler Allsopp, the next in line (by votes) according to tradition. Ryan Williams, newly nominated Conservative Party of Canada winner for the federal Bay of Quinte riding, suggested that the motion should have read the next in line, period. He was right. However, this gave every single councillor and mayor the opportunity to speak about appointing Allsopp. Needless to say, all councillors had strong opinions on the matter during debate.
