Steven Smith Awarded Tennessee Historical Commission Special Commendation For His Books Thursday, May 13, 2021
The Tennessee Historical Commission has announced winners of this year’s annual Certificate of Merit competition. These awards are presented each May during National Preservation Month. The Commissioners’ Special Commendation category went to Steven Smith in Soddy Daisy, for authoring four books.
Since 1975, THC’s Certificate of Merit Program has recognized exemplary work by individuals, groups, organizations, corporations, or governmental entities to further promote historic preservation or the study of history in Tennessee. Nominations are solicited from the public in December of the preceding year and judged by category.

On March 19, when overnight temperatures throughout East Tennessee abruptly flirted with freezing, I received an inquiry from Celia Simon of Kingston.
“So which winter is this?” she wanted to know.
In my typical (smart aleck) fashion, I responded: “Cold Weather Winter is as good a guess as any.”
Celia’s question did light a fire in my pea brain, however. It sparked again during the frigid runup to Easter last weekend, igniting the fuse on my seasonal gripe: Why in the name of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit do we label sudden weather changes in the spring, but not other times of the year?
The newly appointed members are:
Robert Hicks of Franklin, the best-selling author of The Window to the South and a driving force behind much of Franklin s historic preservation;
Kem Hinton of Nashville, principal of an architecture firm and designer of Tennessee s Bicentennial Capitol Mall and new Library and Archives building;
Dr. Bill Kennedy of Jonesborough, a longtime orthopedic surgeon who received the Tennessee Historical Commission s Preservation Leadership Award last year;
The Rev. Frank Stevenson of Nashville, dean of students at Tennessee State University and pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church;
Hanes Torbett of Johnson City, the owner of an insurance firm; and
