An annual showcase to highlight outstanding artworks by students across Savannah and Chatham County is carrying on virtually this year, as the New Beginnings Youth Art Exhibition features over 125 entries of diverse images that can be viewed online in a 3D gallery space.
Presented by The Links, Inc., the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, and Savannah’s municipal government, the 20th-annual New Beginnings exhibit is a fascinating collection of artworks by middle- and high-school students from across the county. Appropriately based on the theme “Visual Art in a Virtual World,” this year’s exhibit was launched with a Feb. 23 virtual opening reception featuring speakers commending the participating artists, teachers, and sponsors.
Maybe members of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools Class of 2021 can look forward to at least one normal thing their senior year a graduation ceremony.
Graduation ceremonies were briefly discussed during the regular school board meeting Wednesday. Seniors can be happy that the topic is on the table, unlike last year when the COVID-19 pandemic kept the ceremonies from happening and schools resorted to drive-thru graduation events.
District Superintendent Ann Levett told the school board that she has received many questions about graduation ceremonies for the class of 2021. She said that tentative plans are being made for limited in-person graduation ceremonies this spring.
Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools employees can look forward to receiving their first COVID vaccine starting next week, if they want it. The first opportunity for district staff vaccinations will be on March 9. We are looking forward to announcing additional venues and opportunities for our staff. As you know, we have our initial place set up for March 9, said Ann Levett, district superintendent, at the school board meeting Wednesday. That information will be shared with our staff, and they will have the opportunity to register. She added that this initial vaccine event will have 500 doses available.
The board discussed the possibility of school sites staggering their employees vaccine appointments in case some staff members have adverse reactions that might cause them to miss a day or two of work. That concern was addressed by Kurt Hetager, the district chief public affairs and administrative services officer.
