york because of such bad visibility with them saying it expects to impact flights up and down the east coast. george solis is live at philadelphia international airport. and angie lasman is tracking where conditions are worse and what s next. what is the latest with all these flight issues and how are travelers coping? reporter: first off, i don t think anyone can get that image out of their heads of that orange skyline. the air quality just as bad here in philadelphia. the fog and the smoke so thick you couldn t see the skyline here either. as far as the air travel is concerned, while the faa did temporarily stop incoming flights here at the airport, they have just announced they have resumed, but obviously this is a cat and mouse game. they don t know how much longer the wind will be here and if the smoke is going to get any heavier. so that could change. so right now, airlines and the faa urging everyone to keep a
54 past the hour. millions of people get ready to kick off the unofficial start of summer, let s get a check of this weekend s forecast. joining us now, angie lasman. we have unsettled weather. most will be in the center of the country. also for the coastal carolinas, soggy conditions. we will see difficulties up and down the east coast. severe storms through the afternoon today. watch for strong winds, hail for texas and new mexico. a great day across the great lakes and into the northeast. still the potential to see stronger storms, not as strong as what we are watching today, across the plains.
a top-seeded team in more than 20 years. time now for the weather. let s go to angie lasman for the forecast. it is late january. yep. new york city is getting no snow. honestly, we might have to wait a little longer. not a lot of snow in the forecast for new york city. inland areas, interior areas of the northeast, for sure. here s what s going on. 14 million people under the winter alerts still at this time. you can see why. there is a coast coastal low. parts of new hampshire, vermont, maine dealing with snowy conditions. so we add that snow, maybe a couple more inches here through the day today. then we start to see things quiet down the we ll have a drier day for the northeast tomorrow. then look ahead to the next system. potential for severe weather to parts of the gulf coast. can you see we look for wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and tornadoes likely. that is tomorrow. here s the system that is the culprit of that. it s going to dip to the south of new mexico here as
into the later parts to have day. eventually gain some steam. bring snow to places like texas and oklahoma tomorrow. eventually that rain and the severe threat will continue through the afternoon hours. and then we see it move into parts of the midwest and the northeast. again, it looks like rain is possible for places like new york and washington, d.c. maybe a little extra snow for places like boston. but even still, we ll be watching this closely. it s kind of that same thing, jonathan, we re on that line between rain and snow. so we ll see exactly how that plays out. january 29th will be the latest of a first snowfall for new york city. we ll see. feels like we ll get there. angie, thank you. still ahead on way too early, president biden s chief of staff is expected to step down in the coming weeks after a very successful first two years. what we re learning about ron klain s potential replacement. we ll be right back with that. s. we ll be right back with that.
