Naturalized player Angelo Kouame said that after years of waiting, he can now concentrate on playing basketball as Gilas Pilipinas prepares for two important FIBA-sanctioned tournaments next month.
The naturalization paper of Kouame was signed into law last week by President Rodrigo Duterte, making the 6-foot-10 center eligible to play for the national team as a naturalized player.
“I am super excited. I’ve been watching these guys playing the last time on TV,” Kouame said Saturday, May 22, as he appeared on The Chasedown on One PH over Cignal TV.
“I felt like it would be good for me to be part of it. I’ve been waiting for that (naturalization) for so long so I feel happy and blessed about it, now it’s going to happen,” said Kouame, who had to gather his papers in his native Ivory Coast in 2019 for the naturalization process.

THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF) expressed disappointment over the delay in the Filipino naturalization of Spanish striker Bienvenido Marañon, but it remains hopeful of it eventually getting the nod.
In a statement released on Tuesday night, PFF President Mariano Araneta said it was unfortunate that the papers of Mr. Marañon did not progress as hoped just as they were looking forward to adding the player to the national team in time for a key continental tournament next month.
The PFF statement came on the heels of the naturalization of Ivorian basketball player Angelo Kouame being signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Monday and announced a day later.

President Rodrigo Duterte approved the naturalization of Gilas Pilipinas player Angelo Kouame after the Chief Executive signed into law the papers that made the center eligible to play for the national team.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio made the announcement Tuesday, May 18, as he expressed his gratitude to the President and other government officials that helped the federation in the process to naturalize Kouame.
“The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is elated to announce that Angelo Kouame’s Filipino naturalization is now official,” Panlilio, a longtime basketball official, said in a statement.
