FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - The mayor of Florence is planning to launch a new program to address homelessness in the city.
This plan is one of several campaign goals Mayor Andy Betterton laid out when he took office six months ago.
Mayor Betterton made the transition from city councilman to mayor in the middle of the pandemic. He describes the last six months in one word: busy!

FLORENCE, Ala. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) has awarded an $828,300 Emergency Solutions Grant to the city of Florence.
Sub-recipients will use the funding to help prevent, prepare for and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in various ways, including providing emergency shelter homeless prevention programs and rapid re-housing assistance to domestic violence victims, people experiencing homelessness and people at risk of homelessness.
Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama, Safeplace, Inc. and the Salvation Army of the Shoals are the sub-recipients of the funding.
“This is exciting news for our city. My thanks to our Planning Department for their continued efforts,” said Mayor Andy Betterton.
